Gavin James

We have the best families ever! Thanks everyone for your love and support!!!

We are so excited to have Gavin here. He was born May 12, 2011 at 9:41 pm. He weighed 8 lbs 2 oz and is 21 inches long. My due date was May 9th, I really wanted to try and go into labor on my own, but it just didn't happen. So on Thursday morning May 12th we were scheduled an induction for 7 am. We got up bright and early Thursday morning and the hospital called and said that they were going to have postpone our induction for later that day because they had so many women walk in that night before in labor. We were bummed! They called us back around 9:30 and asked if we could be there at 9:50, so off we went. Only to just sit around at the hospital waiting for the me to have some antibiotics (because I was GBS positive) before they could start me. At around 1:00 they started me on the pitocin. I got to the maximum dose and was still only dilated to a 3 or 4 (depending on which nurse checked me) which was were I was at the day before at my doctors appointment. At 6:00pm I finally had a nurse that was willing to do anything! She said lets get your midwife in here and break your water. I decided to have the epidural before they broke my water. So they came in and gave me the epidural and then 15 min later Kathy (our midwife) broke my water. Apparently I had a LOT of water because it just kept coming and coming. Ryan said it sounded like a babbling brook:) Just after 9:00 pm I was close to being complete and they babies heart rate kept droppping and he wouldn't turn. His head was facing my side instead of my back and he wasn't coming down at all. They put me in some different positions to try and get his head to turn, but it wasn't working. His rate kept going down. They were talking about calling the doctor in because they were thinking they were going to have to use the vacuum to get him out. I just laid there praying that he would turn and his heart rate would stay up and everything would be ok. The nurses were getting pretty concerned they called Kathy to come in and couldn't get a hold of her. They called her son to see if he could get a hold of her and he did. Her phone somehow got put on airplane mode, who knew that was an option! Anyway she made it! She came in and immediately had me start pushing. I only pushed 4 or 5 times and he was out!!!! He turned his little head the way he was suppose to as he was coming out. He was in a lot of stress when he came out. He pooped in the birth canal and swallowed the fluid, and the cord was wrapped around both of his feet! They put him right on my belly and he was blue! He wasn't breathing or crying, I was really scared! I just touched his little face and started talking to him. Ryan cut the umbilical cord and they put him on the bed where the other nurses could start working on him. They finally got a little cry out of him, that was better than nothing. Then let out some more little whimpers. They were suctioning him out and rubbing him down. Finally everything was under control and they let me hold him. He was wide awake it was such a relief to hold my healthy breathing little boy!
